Article: Boardsox Welcomes Queen Kirra

Boardsox Welcomes Queen Kirra

What age did you start surfing and where did you start surfing?

I started surfing almost as soon as I could walk. Dad is a great surfer and mum is a self proclaimed ‘white water wonder’ and loves the beach so my brother and I would always be down the beach with mum as babies, watching dad surf. It was just something that we were always going to do. I learnt to surf on Phillip Island however spent a lot of time up the coast in northern NSW on holidays and surfed lots as a grom up there too.

What kind of surfer would you describe yourself as?

A fun surfer? haha. I love just love surfing for fun. I also really enjoy a challenge and don’t mind putting myself in situations where I could potentially go down… haha I guess I kind of enjoy wiping out…and it makes it so much more enjoyable when I actually make it.

Who are some surfers who inspire you at the moment?

Oh there are so many! Justine Dupont, Kai Lenny, Ian Walsh, Honolua Blomfield, Phil Rajzman, Kelia Moniz, Sandy Ryan, Mark Mathews… the list goes on. However the surfer who inspires me the most at the moment is India Robinson. She is one of the hardest working, kindest and most humble people I know and she totally rips!!  I’m incredibly inspired by her passion and her dedication and I love watching her follow and achieve her dreams.

Once borders open up do you have any destinations or particular waves you are dying to surf ?

I’d love to go back to Indonesia and head to the Ments/Telos again. Also I would love to go to Hawaii, and the Maldives, and Peru (hello Chicama) and Japan, and Portugal… and many more haha. I’m also moving to QLD early next year to study so I’m pretty keen to surf lots up there as well.

What's the best surf trip you’ve ever been on?

The best surf trip I’ve ever been on would have to be the boat trip that I did to the Mentawai islands and Telo islands in 2019. We scored amazing waves and had the best crew. So much fun!

When your not surfing what can people find you doing?

I work as a surf coach so I spend most of my days sharing my stoke for the ocean teaching others how to surf. I love health and fitness and spend a lot of my spare time outdoors. I like to go to the gym, do yoga, and walk lots. I also enjoy creating art, cooking, going on adventures and hanging with my friends.

What’s your favourite surf movie?

The other side of fear ~ Mark Matthews

If you had to ride one board for the rest of your life, what board would it be and why?

Ummmm that’s a tough one! I’d say my 9’1 ‘Glitter Bug’ - he’s 9’1x23x3. Shaped by my personal shaper (& brother) Surfboards by Gus. I usually surf it as a single fin, however have the option to put side bites in when the waves are bigger. It paddles like a dream, is responsive to turns and also sits nicely in the pocket to nose ride. Did I mention it’s black and covered in gold glitter?? I have also recently ordered a new board (9’6) so maybe that will be my new fave?? Haha

If you could share a perfect empty line-up what wave would you surf and who would you surf it with?

I’m so lucky to have so many amazing friends that surf so surfing with them would so fun. Or go surfing with my brother and dad. As for a perfect empty line up, that’s such a hard one… maybe somewhere in the Ments (I love lefts).

What’s your favourite Boardsox cover?
